PRODUCT DESCRIPTIONS Missouri outdoor state flags are USA made of nylon flag material and are finished with a canvas heading and two brass grommets on the hoist side, 2 rows of stitching top and bottom sides and 4 rows of stitching on the fly side. They are attached to the flagpole by means of a halyard (rope) and flag snaps, or to smaller poles with flag fasteners. Standard sizes for outdoor state flags are 2x3 ft, 3x5 ft, 4x6 ft, 5x8 ft. and 6x10 ft. Extra large outdoor nylon Missouri flags are offered in 8x12 ft, 10x15 ft and 12x18 ft. Production process includes a #10 white nylon rope is sewn into the 2” cotton polyester blend header. Galvanized metal thimble ends are crimped to the rope ends for attachment to the flag snaps. An additional brass grommet is placed midway on the heading for use with a third flag snap for durability and stability on the halyard. Extreme wear outdoor state flags are produced using open weave 2-ply woven polyester, the longest wearing flag material available for daily, long-term display. This open weave material reduces fabric stress and outside fly-end shredding in high wind applications, allowing for up to double the wear of traditional nylon flags. Sizes offered are 3x5 ft, 4x6 ft and 5x8 ft. Textile trade names are Annin Flagmakers Tough-tex or Eder Flag Mfg. Poly-Max. Missouri boat flags are nylon, 12”x18” size with 2 brass grommets. Missouri indoor flags are available in 3x5 ft and 4x6 ft. nylon, and feature a pole sleeve with a flannel liner and a tab sewn inside the sleeve. The tab attaches to a hook or screw a top of the parade or display flagpole to keep the flag from sliding down the pole. Indoor and parade flags are finished with two-inch gold rayon fringe. These flags are also available with a pole sleeve only and no fringe (made to order, allow 2 weeks). All indoor flags are USA made. 3x5 ft indoor flags are typically displayed on either 7 ft or 8 ft poles. 4x6 ft indoor flags are typically displayed on 9 ft poles. Poles are available in polished hardwood and either silver or gold anodized aluminum. Indoor floor stands are available in either weighted ABS plastic or cast metal in gilt, brass or chrome finishes. Sold in quantities of 12 / box only, please call to order. FLAG DESCRIPTION / HISTORY Year Adopted: 1913. Three equal horizontal bands of red, white and blue from top to bottom with the state emblem centered. Twenty-four stars surround the coat-of-arms, representative of Missouri's position as the 24th state admitted to the Union. MIssouri was annexed to the United States with the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. The Territory of Missouri, originally called the Territory of Louisiana until Louisiana statehood in 1812, was an incoporated territory of the United States from 1812-1821. It was admitted to the Union as the 24th state in 1821 under the "Missouri Compromise", which allowed Missouri to enter the Union as a slave state and Maine as a free state, keeping the balance of slave and free states with equal representation in Congress. Although Missouri was allowed to enter as a slave state, the remaining portion of the Louisiana Purchase area north of the 36° 30¢ line was declared to be free of slavery. During the Civil War however, Missouri was a split state with two state governments; one seceded and joined the Confederacy in 1861, and the other remained loyal to the Union. (see Missouri Civil War Museum, mcwm.org) Prior to 1913, no state flag existed for Missouri. A state flag design was considered by the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1908. Committe member Mrs. Marie Elizabeth Oliver, wife of Senator Robert Burett Oliver, and a resident of Cape Girardeau, designed the flag herself, and on March 17, 1909, a bill supporting the design was introduced to the Missouri Senate. It took three years and several attempts before the bill for the "Oliver flag" was finally passed. On March 22, 1913, Governor Elliot Major signed the bill into law, and made the Oliver flag the official state flag of Missouri. (ref: sos.mo.gov, The Missouri State Flag) State Seal: The center of the state seal is composed of two parts. On the right is the United States coat-of-arms containing the bald eagle. In its claws are arrows and olive branches, signifying that the power of war and peace lies with the U.S. federal government. On the left side of the shield, the state side, are a grizzly bear and a silver crescent moon. The crescent symbolizes Missouri at the time of the state seal's creation, a state of small population and wealth which would increase like the new or crescent moon; it also symbolizes the "second son," meaning Missouri was the second state formed out of the Louisiana Territory. This shield is encircled by a belt inscribed with the motto, "United we stand, divided we fall," which indicates Missouri's advantage as a member of the United States. The two grizzlies on either side of the shield symbolize the state's strength and its citizens' bravery. The bears stand atop a scroll bearing the state motto, "Salus Populi Suprema Lex Esto," which means, "Let the welfare of the people be the supreme law." Below this scroll are the Roman numerals for 1820, the year Missouri began its functions as a state. The helmet above the shield represents state sovereignty, and the large star atop the helmet surrounded by 23 smaller stars signified Missouri's status as the 24th state. The cloud around the large star indicates the problems Missouri had in becoming a state. The whole state seal is enclosed by a scroll bearing the words, "The Great Seal of the State of Missouri."
