FLAG DESCRIPTION / HISTORY The Green Mountain Boys were a group of a several hundred American patriots in the the late 1700's that would later be considered the founding fathers of the state of Vermont. They included men from Vermont, Massachusetts, and Connecticut that held land titles from New Hampshire which entitled them to land between Lake Champlain and the Connecticut River, now modern day Vermont. However, the British crown gave all of that land to Loyalist New York, and ignored New Hampshire land grants. The group gathered and joined together to keep New York settlers out of Vermont, and defend New Hampshire titles from New York claims. They drew their name from the Green Mountains of Vermont and were led by Ethan Allen, his brother and two cousins. By 1770 the group became an armed militia force, and when officials from New York tried to enforce their laws upon them, they failed in doing so and in certain cases were repelled by Green Mountain Boys or their followers. When the American Revolution started in 1775 the Green Mountain Boys attacked and captured Fort Ticonderoga, a British held fort. This was America’s first victory in the war and an important one, as it protected northern America from invasion by the British through Canada. The Green Mountain Boys also seized British held Crown Point on Lake Champlain in New York and battles at Hubbarton and Bennington. The Green Mountain Boys became the basis of the self-declared independant Vermont Republic Army in 1777. Vermont was admitted as the fourteenth U.S. state in 1791 and the Green Mountain Boys became part of history. (ref; sec.vt.us) |
