FLAG DESCRIPTION / HISTORY The flag was designed in 1775 by Colonel William Moultrie to prepare for war with Britain. In June of 1776 it was flown during the successful defense of Sullivan's Island fortifications at Charleston harbor against the British fleet. It was the first loss by the British at sea in the Revolution. The flag was the first American flag displayed in the Southern colonies and it became the banner of the South Carolina Militia. The fort at Sullivan's Island was also then named for Col. Moultrie. |
